The Honest Guide to Owning a Home Sauna: Costs, Install, and What Nobody Tells You

You have screenshots of saunas on your phone and have told nobody yet. Fifteen tabs open, none trusted. Your gym schedule already bends around its sauna, so the heat is not the question. What one really costs standing in your house, and which type fits: this guide answers both, awkward parts first.

  • Family-run since 2021
  • 100% built in Europe, where sauna was born
  • Every price on our website, VAT and import duty included
  • Harvia heaters
  • Delivered to mainland Great Britain

A short call, by phone. No deposit taken.

Do not start with the brand

Most sauna research starts in the wrong place: a brand, a photo, a heater spec. Then it stalls, because three plainer questions never got answered. Where would it go. What does it cost, delivered and wired. And will you use it enough to justify it. This guide takes those three in order, awkward parts first.

On the why, we will keep it short, because you are past it. Sauna has decades of research behind it, including the well-known Finnish studies: physical and mental benefits, year-round. Paired with a cold plunge, the instant hot-cold contrast at home.

One ground rule: every forum owner we quote is labelled, not presented as our customer.

Your scepticism is earned. Keep it switched on. Everything here is meant to survive it.

The gym has already answered the heat question for you. What it cannot answer is the delivery: shared, timed, a drive away, on somebody else's hours. Everything below is about closing that gap, so the twenty minutes happens at home, twenty steps from your kitchen, with the door shut and the phone left on the kitchen worktop.

Here is what stands between you and it, in the order it will cost you money.

What a home sauna really costs, in three lines

The number you are trying to find is not one number. It is three. Here they are, in the order they will land on your bank statement.

1

The sauna itself

Every price below is in pounds with VAT and import duty already in it, so no customs charge waits for you at delivery. Each range spans that model's variants.

2

Delivery and assembly

Checkout shows the whole delivery charge, and nothing is added after you order; if your postcode or access cannot be quoted there, we agree a fixed price with you in writing before we accept your order. Delivery is kerbside; assembly is yours to arrange unless we quote for it separately, in writing.

3

The registered electrician

Every sauna we sell needs one. This line depends on your consumer unit and the run to the cabin, so it is quoted by your electrician, not by us, and we say so first.

Live prices from our store, matching each product page. Delivery, assembly and electrical are additional.

Why we say the awkward line first

In sauna forums, the electrician is the line people budget for before they choose a brand. A listing that leaves it out is just quieter about it. Electrical work is the one cost our website does not price, because it changes from house to house.

We may recommend an electrician, and if you use one, the agreement is between the two of you; your own electrician is just as welcome to speak with our team.

Those are the three lines. Where the first one lands depends on the next decision: the shape and the size.

Barrel or cabin: the same heat in two shapes

This is where research tends to stall, and stalling sends you back to the gym sauna by default. Here is the plain version.

PlusLife Max Traditional 2.0 outdoor cabin sauna with a full tinted-glass front, a warm timber frame with rounded corners and a black shingle roof
100% built in Europe, where sauna was born

The heat: traditional

Every model we sell, barrel or cabin

  • A heater and stones. Hotter air, water on the rocks when you want steam. The heat you already know from the gym.
  • Harvia heaters, sized to the cabin, with the model number and kilowatt rating in writing for your model.
  • 42mm walls on the premium traditional line, and the why: thicker walls mean better insulation and faster heat-up.
  • Hard-wired by a registered electrician.
PlusLife Arc Barrel outdoor sauna in natural light timber with a glass door and a black shingle roof
Two shapes, one kind of heat

The shape: barrel or cabin

Priced in the table above and on our website

  • Barrels: the Arc, the Cove and the Meridian.
  • Cabins: the Mini 2.0, the Max 2.0, the Crest and the Summit.
  • The same traditional heat in either shape, so the choice comes down to footprint and looks.
  • Base dimensions and weights for every model are on its product page.

Neither shape is wrong. Three questions usually settle it.

1. Which shape?

A barrel or a cabin. The heat inside is the same, so the choice is the footprint your spot allows and the look you prefer.

2. Which spot?

The garden, a patio or the decking: any model. Each one is weatherproofed, so a garage or a spare room works too; indoors, bring the footprint and the ceiling height to the call.

3. Who else?

Two to three person if the ritual is mainly yours. Four to six if you already know the family will follow you in.

If you still cannot tell, that is what the call is for: a person answers this one, for your house, and if a sauna might not be for you, we will say so.

What actually goes wrong, and four questions about the cabin

If you have been reading sauna threads, you have met this story already. It is the reason the category feels risky.

I have paid a LOT of money and expected to have a product that would be shipshape and live for 20 plus years… it had some cracks in the boards and I could see daylight through the roof… I'm not keen to go and find another and have to repay an electrician too.

Owner, public sauna forum. A different brand, not PlusLife. The last line is the part people miss.

That last line is the real arithmetic. A sauna that fails costs you the sauna, the removal, the replacement, and the electrician a second time. The gap between a cheap cabin and a considered one is smaller than it looks.

You cannot audit a timber cabin from a photograph. You can ask four questions. These are the first four of eight on this page.

1. Where is this line built?

Not the company's address. The line's. Every sauna we sell is handcrafted and 100% built in Europe, where sauna was born, the Arc, Cove and Meridian barrels included. A certificate of origin is available on request.

2. What timber, and how thick?

Ours: 42mm walls on the premium traditional line, and the why: thicker walls mean better insulation, faster heat-up and a better sauna. The timbers, Thermo-Aspen and Thermo-Pine, are thermo-treated for harsh climates, a wet British winter included. Benches in Aspen or Alder, knotless and smooth so you do not get burnt.

3. Whose heater is in it?

An unnamed "stainless heater included" tells you nothing. Ours is named. We partner with Harvia, the biggest sauna heater manufacturer in the world. A seller who answers "a quality heater" has answered you.

4. What is the warranty, in writing, for this model?

Not the banner figure. The number on your model, in writing, before you pay anything. Ours is answered plainly in the FAQ at the end of this page.

None of that makes a sauna indestructible. It makes the failure modes checkable in advance.

Which one fits your household?

A short call with a PlusLife specialist, by phone. Bring the room and, if you have it, a photo of the space. You leave knowing format, size, and what delivery comes to for your postcode, with "not yet" a perfectly acceptable answer.

Book your free expert consultation

You choose the slot from a calendar; the call is free and no deposit is taken.

Not ready to book? The next part is the one you came for: whether you will use it.

Four things we would rather tell you now than after you order

  1. Where it goes decides more than the brand does.

Indoors: ceiling height, footprint, floor, power. Outdoors: a level, load-bearing base, the power run, the door swing. And you have to like looking at it, every day. One check is yours before it arrives: ask your local authority whether your spot needs planning permission or building control approval. Tonight's homework: stand in the corner you keep picturing, take one photo, note the ceiling height, bring those to the call.

  2. Every model needs a registered electrician. No exceptions.

In a home, connecting a sauna is notifiable work under Part P: it takes an electrician registered with a competent person scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT, working to BS 7671, and you keep the certificate. The heater runs on its own circuit with RCD protection. Most British homes are single phase, while some heaters need three phase, so ask us which heater your model takes and get your electrician's view of the supply before you order.

  3. Lead times are on each product page.

Every sauna is made to order, so the build starts once you have ordered: typically 6 to 10 weeks from order to delivery, confirmed on your order confirmation. Book the electrician and any installer for after it has arrived and been checked, and if you are not installing straight away, keep the crate under cover: it is not waterproof.

  4. Assembly is not a flat-pack afternoon.

The crate is large and heavy, and it is unloaded at the kerb. Before you order, check that a large vehicle can reach you and that the crate can travel from the kerb to your spot: gate widths, steps, slopes, overhead clearance. From there, it is built by your own installer, or by an assembly partner we may recommend, whom you engage directly.

Questions five to eight: about the company, not the cabin

You already have four questions about the build. Here are four about whoever is selling it to you. Put all eight to every sauna company on your list, ours included.

5. Is the price public?

If you have to request a quote just to see a price, ask why. Every price is on our website, with delivery quoted at checkout.

6. Can I change my mind after ordering?

Every seller should give you a straight answer. Ours: within 7 days of your order, and before production on your build has started, you get a full refund.

7. What happens to my money between ordering and delivery?

The quiet fear here is a large transfer to a company that stops answering. Ours: family-run since 2021, with named founders. You pay half when you order and the rest within 14 days, or all of it up front, with no card fee, and the payment and cancellation terms are published on our website before you buy. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies on top.

8. Who answers once it is installed?

A support line that rings out is the other quiet fear. Ours: a UK phone line and a support email, weekdays from 9am to 5pm UK time. Most faults are fixed remotely from photos and video you send; when one is not, an engineer visits or a replacement part is sent to you, at our cost where the fault is covered.

You do not have to buy from us for this page to be useful.

Take the eight questions to the owner forums, because that is where you were going to check anyway. What you will find there is not a brand consensus. It is a budget one:

Budget started low, until this sub put me off the lower priced kits.

Buyer, public sauna forum. Not a PlusLife customer. Owners revise budgets upward far more often than downward.

The owners' answer to "will you actually use it?"

The short answer

The habit already exists; your gym timetable proves it. What keeps failing is the delivery: shared, timed, a drive away, on somebody else's clock.

The question underneath all of this is not the price. It is whether you will use it. A PlusLife customer put it plainly in our 2025 customer survey: "I wasn't sure if I'd use it enough or if it'd be worth the investment."

Ownership does not ask you to build a new habit. It moves the one you have to twenty steps from the kitchen, at nine at night, with the door closed and the phone left on the kitchen worktop.

Some of the hesitation is not about the sauna at all. When everything else in the house is for someone else, a purchase whose first beneficiary is you can feel indulgent. Read enough owner threads and the phrase that keeps recurring is some version of: it is the one part of the day that is mine.

In the forums, the heater gets a sentence; how often people get in gets the thread. And the pattern owners describe is the same one, over and over: the sauna becomes the evening's fixed point, the one stretch of the day with no phone in reach.

A home sauna does not need the whole household to love it; it needs one person with a consistent evening ritual. And the habit dies on friction: a cold cabin and a wait, at nine at night, when you are already tired.

That is the practical case for the Wi-Fi controller. Depending on the heater you pick, every traditional sauna can be optioned with it (a premium applies) or comes with built-in controls; prices are on the website and confirmed on the call. Harvia is behind the app: the biggest sauna heater manufacturer in the world, publicly listed, our heater partner. Schedule the sauna from the app before you leave, it learns your cabin's heat-up time, and it notifies your phone when it is ready. A cheap Wi-Fi extender solves reach if the cabin sits far from the router.

Two PlusLife sauna owners, in their own words

I bought the Max 2.0… delivery was smooth once we were set up. I have been in it every day since. The build quality is excellent and it does exactly what I wanted.

Liam H. PlusLife product-page review, fetched 13 August 2026, shortened where marked.

Much better sleep since starting the sauna

Natalie F., PlusLife sauna customer. 2025 customer survey response.

Better sleep is the note we hear most from sauna owners: heat in the evening, wind down, then bed.

Customer words are reproduced as written. They describe those customers' own experience, and individual experiences vary.

Strip out everything we sell and the question is small and domestic. Picture the end of an ordinary Tuesday: the house gone quiet, the phone charging on the kitchen worktop, twenty minutes with nothing asked of you. If that picture is worth protecting, the rest is logistics.

If the habit already exists, the rest is logistics

Where PlusLife fits into this

PlusLife Health is family-run since 2021, founder-operated, and we still use our own products every day. Our saunas are 100% built in Europe, where sauna was born.

We will be direct about why this page exists: we would like the chance to help you plan this properly. Not to pressure you. To plan. A sauna bought without clear answers on placement, wiring and use is how a wellness purchase ends up as furniture.

We are a husband and wife business with both founders named on our About page, and we use the sauna at home at the end of the day the same way our customers describe using theirs. That is the whole of the credential.

  • Family-run since 2021
  • Husband and wife founders, both named
PlusLife Mini Traditional 2.0 outdoor sauna: black-stained timber cabin with rounded corners, a tall tinted-glass door and a black shingle roof, in a clearing among birch and pine I have been in it every day since.Liam H.
The Mini Traditional 2.0, outdoor traditional.

There is no deadline. There is an order of operations.

You will not find a countdown on this page; manufactured urgency is exactly the tell you have been screening for. What is true is duller: this purchase has a sequence, and most of the waiting belongs to other people. Your electrician's quote takes as long as it takes, and lead times sit on each product page.

Most people don't wake up one morning and decide to buy a sauna. It takes weeks, sometimes months, of research and discussion with your family. Starting the sequence is the cheapest, most reversible step on the list.

And a sale price should have a reason you can hear out loud. Ask for the reason, from us or from anyone.

The questions most readers ask next

Yes, for every PlusLife sauna: each one is hard-wired by a registered electrician. Your model's supply, single or three phase, is on its product page, and we go through it with you on the call.

If your gym's sauna has a heater and stones, you already have: it is the same kind of heat as ours. A spa or a friend's sauna works too. Sit in one with this guide in mind, and bring what you noticed to the call.

The Mini 2.0, the Max 2.0 and the Meridian Barrel carry five years on the cabin, timber inside and out. The term for every other model, and what each part is covered for, is set out on our warranty page, so you can read it in writing before you order.

Timber cover depends on oiling the exterior every 12 months, sooner on an exposed spot.

A PlusLife specialist asks about the space and who will use it, then gives a straight recommendation on format and size, talks through delivery to your postcode and the route in for the crate, and says what to tell your electrician. If the honest answer is "not yet", you will hear that too.

20 minutes to an hour on average, depending on the temperature you want, and a little longer on a cold night.

The practical answer on the traditional range is the Wi-Fi controller: schedule the sauna from your phone before you leave, and the wait happens while you are still driving home.

It depends on the heater's kilowatt rating, your electricity tariff, and how often you run it. Ask for your model's kilowatt figure on the call and put it next to your own tariff.

You should not trust it. You should check it. Everything here is written to be checked, and every forum quote is labelled as not our customer.

The eight questions above were written to be used on us as much as on anyone else. If we fail one of them for your situation, we would rather you found that out on the call than after a deposit.

Which one is right for your house? Ask us, honestly.

The screenshots on your phone have been piling up for months, and no further reading will settle the two things only a person can settle: what fits your actual room, and what it costs to your actual address. That is one short call.

  • A straight recommendation on format and size, including "not yet" if that is the truth
  • Exactly what to hand your electrician
  • Your model's warranty term and lead time, both in writing
